Regression

After 12 days of co-sleeping, breaking routines, skipping naps, K’s sleeping habits have regressed. For the past 3 days since we got back from our vacation, I have to re-train him all over again to sleep by himself.

Sleeping routines have got back to usual, more or less. Except that he is very bad tempered, stubborn, un-cooperative and has started screaming when he does not get his way. When I ask him what is wrong with him, he tells me, “Not enough sleep.” A lousy excuse when he gets up early, too early at 7.30 a.m. and then refuses to go back to sleep.

So I have resorted to using the threat of ‘the hanger’ a little too often these past couple of days. K is absolutely terrified of the sight of ‘the hanger’ and that is probably the only thing that can coerce good behaviour out of him for now. Besides ‘the hanger’, I have another trump card for now; his birthday cake and presents. His birthday is approaching in about a weeks’ time and I have told him that if continues to misbehave, there will be no cake, no presents, no celebration.

Sometimes, all it takes is that potential thought of a loss of privileges, that might get a tot to wise up a little.

Kyle’s Sydney adventure Day 4

After 3 days of packed schedules, I decided that K should take a breather so we kept our day easy and relaxing. K slept in till 10+ in the morning, while Grand-dad and Nana did more shopping for Uncle Nick’s home in Sydney.

We took a leisure walk to the nearest McD’s and K got his share of fast food for brunch, before returning to our 29th floor serviced apartment in the heart of Sydney’s city. We leisurely enjoyed the morning and spent some time taking in some cool breeze and the view of the city from the balcony of the apartment.RIMG1913blog

RIMG1916blogK and I made our way to Powerhouse museum in the afternoon. The Powerhouse museum is housed in an power station for Sydney’s old tram network and is one of Australia’s largest museum filled with interactive zones spanning technology, science and history. We did not visit the other exhibitions within the museum and headed straight for Zoe’s House Play Space.

One of the key attractions of this museum for kids 3-6 years old is the renowned Zoe’s House play space; an interactive installation encouraging cooperative and creative play.RIMG1931blogAs it was a weekday afternoon, the play space was relatively empty except for 3 other kids sharing the area. K had a great time pretending he was a builder and getting someone to play alongside with him. RIMG1935blog

Sleeping through

K is finally able to sleep through the night!

After being consistently denied milk twice nightly for one week and constantly being shouted at to “Go back to sleep!” each time he sits up on his bed in the wee hours of the morning. He has finally decided that there is really no point waking up in the middle of the night to be treated ‘cruelly’ by his unfeeling mother. Through the past 2 weeks, I have learnt that the best way to train a child to sleep through the night is to not give him any sort of attention at all. In other words, I have ignored all cries and complains and will comfort him only if he has been woken up from a nightmare.

The longest stretch of shut-eye that he has held so far this week is a full 11 hours! A real feat for someone barely 2 weeks ago would only sleep for 4-5 hours stretches at one time and wake up 2 to 3x at night. Our bedtime routine right after reading bedtime stories, singing some songs and saying a prayer, will be to arrange a ‘sleeping party’. His favorite soft toys will take turns to say goodnight to him, get a customary kiss and hug from him and would share the pillow with him. A hug and a kiss good night from me next and I will be out of his room! He has learnt to self-soothe, so he will then take another 15 – 30 minutes to sing himself to sleep.

Yeah! Sleep training efforts have finally paid off. The process has been painful for the last 3 weeks but the rewards are truly worthwhile :)
